Job Service to host first career fair since 2009
News every out of work person in Western Montana wants to hear. Analysts think the job market here has bounced back, and they're pushing to match employers to workers.
Missoula will host Western Montana's largest career fair next month. It's Missoula Job Service's first one in four years. Between 3,000 and 4,000 job seekers are expected to show and they'll be able to touch base with around 100 employers.
2009 was the last time Missoula Job Service hosted a career fair, events like that were put on hold during a struggling economy. But organizers say things are on the upswing, and they're ready to help.
“We’re really excited because we think the economy’s coming back, and have seen over the last few months, a pick-up in hiring,” said Missoula Job Service Manager Wolf Ametsbichler.
Companies from around Missoula, across the state and even nationwide will set up at the April 25 career fair.
“The wide range is geographic in that we have companies like Halliburton coming in,” Ametsbichler said. “They’re very interested in recruiting from this area for the various oil services that they provide.”
And they're ready to hire.
“They’re either hiring right now or anticipate hiring within the next three to four months.”
People we talked to say it's refreshing to see jobs being offered with the hope of careers that can stick. And say they can see change local economy, from new businesses to the real estate market.
Here are just a few comments:
“It seems to me the real estate changed. We bought a house and in one year we’ve seen quite a difference in the real estate market.”
“All you have to do is look around.”
“Three or four restaurants are opening up downtown so that’s a pretty significant effort on their part. So there must be some enthusiasm about it.”
“There’s a lot of stuff going up, so I think it’s great.”
It's that positivity that's fueling Missoula Job Service to host the event that will benefit Western Montana.
“We expect, like in the past, 3,000 to 4,000 people looking for work or getting information about employers at that event,” Ametsbichler said.
The goal is simple: Help people find jobs or at least give them options. Something that was almost unthinkable just four years ago.
