It was a hard fought game from both teams. SMU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but Montana State responded on a 1 yard touchdown run by Cody Kirk. After that MSU controlled the tempo of the first half they added two more scores, one from receiver Jon Ellis from 13 yards out and the other from running back Shawn Johnson from 2 yards out. The Bobcats found themselves with a 22-5 lead but allowed the Mustangs to score not only once but twice. The first score was a 2 yard touchdown run, and the second score was a 55 yard punt return for a touchdown that ended the first half.

In the start of the second half MSU got right back to where they left of giving the ball to Cody Kirk. Kirk scored from 12 yards out to give the Bobcats a 30-19 lead. For most of the second half it was about the Bobcat defense. MSU held SMU to a pair of field goals which brought the score to 30-25. SMU got the ball back at the 19 yard-line in the fourth quarter with 3:45 left. The Mustangs drove all the way down field managing the clock along the way. Then with :20 left in the game SMU fired a touchdown pass to give them a one point lead. Montana State had one last chance and needed a miracle that wouldn't be answered. In the end SMU won the game by a final score of 31-30.

Montana State will be back in action next weekend in Bozeman when they host Colorado Mesa.
