Blackfeet cancel leases near Chief Mountain
Blackfeet officials say oil-and-gas leases near a mountain that is sacred to the tribe have been canceled.
Last week's revelation the Blackfeet Tribal Business Council had leased land near Chief Mountain on the border with Glacier National Park had led to anger and protests among tribal members.
The mountain is protected for the spiritual use of the Blackfeet. The tribal council said in a statement Wednesday nothing will disturb the area.
The council says the leases with Nations Energy LLC were canceled because the company hadn't paid, and the area in question is outside the protected buffer zone at least 2 miles from the mountain.
The announcement of the canceled leases came three days before a protest was to be held at Chief Mountain.
