Changes in store for parking at MSU
It is almost time for Bobcats to begin another school year at MSU. We found out there are significant changes coming for those who park on campus.
Right now, most parking lots on campus appear empty, but in just a few weeks it will be a different story as students head back to school. For those who cannot get to class by walking or biking, that means they have to find a parking space.
We spoke to Lisa Henderson. She is a senior at MSU who will have to buy a parking permit for the upcoming school year.
"You don't always have a spot unless you have an 8a.m. class," said Henderson.
She tells us finding parking on campus is something she worries about.
"Now that I am off campus, it is going to be more difficult to find a parking spot," said Henderson.
Parking Services Manager Kurt Blunck is hoping some of the projects they have been working on this summer will put students minds at ease.
"We are trying to make it a better parking experience for everybody," said Blunck.
We had Blunck show us where all of the construction is happening. He tells us everything should be complete by the time students move in. We asked him what the biggest change is people need to be aware of, he says it is the parking lot right across from the stadium.
"This was a dirt lot, it has now been paved. It will be re-designated from F which was out least expensive permit to SB and D," said Blunck.
Blunck also says the price tag on this project is around 1.5 million dollars and is mostly paid for through parking permits and fines. He tells me fines will not go up this year but parking permit prices will.
"The SB, D, E and F lots will all go up five dollars. The reserved parking depending on which permit you have will go up between 8-12 dollars," said Blunck.
As the campus continues to grow we asked if there were any concrete plans for even more parking lots.
"I don't know exactly what is going to come down the pipe for next summer," said Blunck.
