Chippewa Cree tribe sets new election date
The Chippewa Cree tribe has set a new date to elect a chairman.
The Chippewa Cree Business Committee said Thursday a special election will be held on July 30.
Six candidates are contending for the position, including Ken Blatt St. Marks, the chairman who was ousted in March.
The other candidates include state Sen. Jonathan Windy Boy and business council member Richard Morsette.
The business committee voted to remove St. Marks after accusing him of neglect of duty and gross misconduct.
He denied the allegations, saying the real reason for his removal was his cooperation with a federal investigation into corruption at the Rocky Boy's reservation.
Plans for an election in May were scrapped after St. Marks filed a complaint over a decision to disqualify him as a candidate.
