Daines maintains that Senate must negotiate
Republican U.S. Rep. Steve Daines says he is not interested in talking about continued funding for the government until Democrats agree to talk about spending cuts.
Daines said in an interview Tuesday that the Senate and the president must be willing to negotiate items sought by Republicans. The freshman Republican said it is "irresponsible" for President Barack Obama to say he won't negotiate.
Democrats argue that Republicans must agree to reopen the government and allow the country to borrow more money.
U.S. Sen. Jon Tester said Tuesday that Daines and other Republicans need to pass the clean "continuing resolution" that is before the chamber.
Tester said negotiations over spending, debt and taxes have taken place and will continue to do so during the budgeting process.
