'Dock Dogs’ make a splash at Western Montana Fair

A Missoula favorite at the Western Montana Fair kicked off Wednesday.
The line-up for the second annual Dock Docks competition could be fierce…but mostly fluffy.
Some of the competitors are unlikely. Take the 11-year-old pit bull Kane -- he’s more of a flopper than a jumper, but he makes it into the water.
“He had never done it before but he loves water and he looks cute,” said Kane’s owner Trish Stevens.
For other pups like 1-year-old Osa, a black lab, the sport came easy.
“She did well,” said Osa’s owner Ken Miller. “We’ll watch to see how some of the other dogs do. I'm not sure what the standard is yet.”
Maddie, another first timer, jumped right in. “She loves jumping off the dock at the lake up at Flathead so we thought we'd give it a shot,” said owner Julie North.
But not every pooch was ready to plunge in the ‘Big Air’ competition. The goal is to jump the farthest -- or for some dogs, at least make it in the pool.
Dock Dog events run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. from now through Saturday and until 4 p.m. on Sunday. You can catch the competition on the west lawn of the fairgrounds.
