Firefighters' dispute with board moves into courts
A months-long dispute between a group of Gallatin County rural firefighters and the department's board has spilled into the courts.
A state judge ordered the former chief of the Bridger Canyon Fire Department reinstated as part of a civil lawsuit filed by three homeowners. The homeowners argue the board created a hostile work environment that caused the chief and 15 firefighters to resign, leaving their homes without adequate fire protection.
The residents filed the lawsuit on Friday and on Tuesday sought the reinstatement of Chief Dan Astrom. District Judge Mike Salvagni ordered Astrom reinstated until June 21, when he can hold a hearing.
Astrom said he believed the majority of the firefighters who resigned would return if he was reinstated.
