Mavs set for state as #2 seed
The Missoula Mavericks entered this past weekend with still a chance to grab the #1 seed for this week's state tournament, but because the Billings Scarlets won as well the Mavericks will settle for the #2 seed heading into the Magic City this week.
The Mavericks finished their regular season with an overall record of 51-22 to go with a conference mark of 17-7. Those 17 league victories are the most in the conference but unfortunately it was only the 2nd highest winning percentage next to the Scarlets who played two less conference games.
The players say 1-seeds and 2-seeds don't mean much, it's winning a state title this week in Billings that means everything.
"You know it's always nice to get that #1 seed," said Mavs infielder Tres Cunningham. "If you look at it I guess it could be an easier bracket but either way we look at it we're probably going to be one of the best teams over there, so #1 or #2 seed we're just going to go there and keep playing good."
"It doesn't matter, we just have to show up and win no matter what," said Mavs Catcher Slade Heggen. "The better teams are going to require us to play better and if we're the #2 seed playing the #7 seed we'll still have the advantage is the way I see it. No matter what we better come out and play because anything can happen at state."
The Mavericks will take on #7 seed Helena in their first game of the tournament at 4:00, you can find updated scores from the tournament by clicking here.
