Back-to-school shopping season means sales on a wide range of products, but it doesn't mean you should buy everything. Yahoo Shopping has teamed up with Dealnews.comand RetailMeNot to bring you a list of what you'd be crazy to buy in August -- and what deals you should snatch up.
(Best Buys) Clothing
There are tons of reasons to shop for clothes in August, from end-of-the-season sales on hot-weather items like swimsuits and tank tops to back-to-school sales and sales tax holidays, some of which occur in early August in some states.
School supplies and dorm furniture
Not surprisingly, August is also a big month for sales on school supplies. And Target, Walmart and other retailers are offering deals on everything from bedding to desk lamps for dorms.
Many laptop manufacturers offer back-to-school discounts for students this month. State tax holidays also commonly apply to laptops, which can save a bundle.
Deals on BBQ grills traditionally heat up as the grilling season winds down in August. Look for deals at Home Depot, Lowes, Ace Hardware and elsewhere.
Big screen TVs
Name-brand TVs, ranging in size from 46 inches to 55 inches, have suddenly gone on sale to prices unseen since Black Friday, according to editors at DealNews.
Typically, it's better to wait until September or October for deals on patio sets. But this year is an anomoly. Prices are already stellar, meaning inventory may clear out quicker, so you should probably snap up those deals now.
(Worst Deals) Phones and tablets
New versions of Apple's iPhone and iPad are possible this fall, which means a drop in prices on current models. So it's best to wait it out.
Plane tickets to Boston, Chicago or San Francisco
Fare discounts for these cities are expected on Nov. 23, the Sunday before Thanksgiving, so hold off for a bit and consider booking a trip around that date.
