Steven Stayner (Left, 1972) -- Snatched off the streets of Merced, Calif., at age 7, Stayner was held captive by Kenneth Parnell until age 14, when he escaped with another Parnell victim, Timothy White (also shown), in 1980.
Steve Carter (1977) -- Carter solved his own missing persons case when he found his photograph on a site for missing children in 2012. Turns out, he was reported missing by his biological father after his mother, Charlotte Moriarty, took him for a walk in 1977 and never returned. His mother put him in a Hawaiian orphanage and he was later adopted at age 4, eventually reuniting with his biological family.
Gabriel Nagy (1987) -- An Australian native, Nagy called his wife in 1987 to tell her he'd be home for lunch but never returned. His burned-up car was found on the side of a road, and two weeks later he withdrew money for camping supplies. Turns out, a head wound from the crash gave him nearly total amnesia. He was found 23 years later.
Nguyen Thi Van (1992) -- Locked out of her Vietnam home one night for staying out too late, a 16-year-old Van went to several bars with friends and woke up the next morning in China. She and three other girls were forced to marry Chinese men, living with them and bearing their children for years. It was only last year that Van finally managed to escape in a pig truck and make her way back to her shocked parents in Vietnam.
Richard Wayne Landers (1994) -- Abducted from Indiana by his paternal grandparents at age 5, Landers was found living with his grandparents in a small town in Minnesota 19 years later earlier this year. Landers defended his grandparents in a Facebook post, saying he was "where I needed to be." He works at an auto parts store and is expecting a child with his wife. The case has been forwarded to federal authorities for possible charges.
Shawn Hornbeck (2002) -- Kidnapped in 2002 at age 11 while riding his bike near his Missouri home, Hornbeck was found more than four years later living in a St. Louis apartment with a man named Michael J. Devlin. Devlin has since been sentenced to life in prison.
Elizabeth Smart (2002) -- At age 14, Smart was abducted from her Salt Lake City home from Brian David Mitchell, a drifter who previously worked at the family home. Nine months later, a heavily-veiled Smart was found walking with Mitchell and his wife in Salt Lake City. She was eventually reunited with her family.
Danielle Cramer (2006) -- She went missing at age 15 in June 2006, but was discovered by police a year later locked in a secret upstairs cupboard in West Hartford, Conn. Police had gone to the house to arrest Adam Gault, 41, whom they suspected of murder, but instead managed to free Danielle.
Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight (early 2000s) -- These three women were found in the Cleveland home of Ariel Castro in 2013 after more than a decade of captivity. Knight disappeared first in 2002 at age 21, followed by Berry in 2003 at age 17 and DeJesus in 2004 at age 14. Neighbors rescued them after hearing Berry's screams. Castro later committed suicide in prison.
