The following is a press release from Missoula County:
Missoula County Commissioner Jean Curtiss has been invited to celebrate her role in Let’s Move! Missoula by First Lady Michelle Obama on July 10, 2013 in Washington, D.C. Commissioner Curtiss will join other elected officials from across the county to share strategies that have been effective in addressing childhood obesity. In addition, Commissioner Curtiss will join a panel of experts where she will share the many successes of Let’s Move! Missoula with other interested city, town and county officials. The panel is hosted by the National League of Cities and Towns.
Let’s Move! Missoula is a public/private partnership of leaders whose mission is to reduce and prevent childhood obesity in Missoula County while enhancing the health of all residents. The purpose of Let’s Move! Missoula is to create, support and mobilize projects and partnerships that enhance and build healthy environments for all children and residents. Strategies include education, policy development, advocacy and environmental change.
Missoula County has a higher rate of childhood obesity than should be expected. A four year study of Missoula County third graders found that 28% are above the healthy guidelines and of those 12% are obese. This information has galvanized leaders in the community to set specific goals to address the problem.
Let’s Move! Missoula has had many successes in the past two years including the Summit to Prevent Childhood Obesity in October, 2012. The summit convened national experts and over 200 participants to explore the many community projects and policies that are proven to help create healthy home, school and community environments for our youth. This fall Missoula County Public Schools will partner with Let’s Move! Missoula to host a Summit for Healthier Children. This summit will explore school policies surrounding nutrition and physical activity.
Partners of Let’s Move! Missoula include: Community Medical Center, City of Missoula, Missoula Area Chamber of Commerce, Missoula City-County Health Department, Missoula Board of County Commissioners, Missoula County Public Schools, Missoula County Superintendent of Schools, Missoula Family YMCA, Missoula Parks & Recreation, Office of the Mayor, Providence St. Patrick Hospital, The University of Montana, and United Way of Missoula County.
