HELENA, Mont. -

If American society's tolerance for marijuana is growing, then what happened in Montana illustrates just what can happen when the government decides things have gone too far.

The state's booming medical marijuana industry covered what federal prosecutors say was large pot trafficking operations.

A three-year investigation wrapped up last week when the last of 33 convicted defendants was sentenced.

U.S. Attorney Michael Cotter says something had to be done and the crackdown showed marijuana won't be tolerated.

Voters in Colorado and Washington state have passed laws to legalize recreational pot use, and a Pew Research Center poll released last month found 52 percent of Americans think marijuana should be legal.

Cotter says he believes he is on the right side of history, regardless of what is happening in the country.
