5 Bullock vetoes upheld in override vote

HELENA, Mont. -

State lawmakers are upholding five of Gov. Steve Bullock's vetoes in the first round of override votes.
The Montana Secretary of State reported Monday that legislators failed to reach the two-thirds threshold required to override a governor's veto.
The bills are the first group of vetoes that faced a poll of lawmakers after the session adjourned.
The vetoed measures upheld Monday placed new restrictions on state land purchases, struck conditional language on some school money, spent more coal tax money and changed accreditation standards.
The override poll closes next week on the last 19 of Bullock's vetoes. Lawmakers say two measures dealing with money to help oil boom towns and for Medicaid providers could reach the override threshold.
Bullock argues the vetoes were needed to save money.
