58th Annual Five Valley Kennel Club dog show kicked off Sunday
MISSOULA, Mont. -

Sunday afternoon hundreds of folks from around the county showed off their pooches in the 58th Annual Five Valley Kennel Club dog show.

NBC Montana headed to the Western Montana Fairgrounds to take a look at some of the competitors and we talked to one professional dog handler from California, Dick Greaver, who tells us he competes in as many as 120 shows a year.

Greaver tells us each breed has its own standard and the judges are looking for the dog that best fits that standard; so each dog's body structure, teeth, fur and movement are all under the microscope as these dogs strut their stuff in the ring.

“We like showing them off and we're very competitive,” said Greaver.  “We enjoy this and it's a great sport.”

Greaver tells NBC Montana there are some bonuses in competing in a number of dog shows, such as traveling the country and meeting new dog show lovers.

“It's just the excitement of doing it because it’s just you and your dog,” he said.  “Everybody out here is kind of like family after a while and you get to know whose dogs are whose and it's a lot of fun.”

Don’t worry if you couldn’t make it to the dog show Sunday afternoon because the show continues Monday and Tuesday at the Western Montana Fairgrounds.

The event is free and open to the public.
