Dispatchers received a call just after 4pm Friday for a missing 23 year old man who was visiting relatives from out of state. Relatives told authorities they noticed footprints leading down to the Flathead River.
Search and rescue crews ended their efforts around midnight Friday night but were up early Saturday morning with aerial, ground, and dive teams all looking for the young man.
Flathead County Search and Rescue, North Valley Search and Rescue, US Border Patrol, and the Canine Team continued their search throughout the morning hours. Shortly before noon, an aerial crew discovered the body of the missing man in the main fork of the Flathead River.
"He was a few miles downstream from where he had entered the river, presumably," explained Sheriff Chuck Curry.
As a crew worked to recover the young man's body, Curry returned to the staging area. He thanked all of the volunteers, who make up 90% of the operation, for their hard work and dedication in their search efforts.
"We did have a great response from all of our volunteer organizations," said Curry. "It was a great effort and we're happy we can bring this to a close fairly quickly for the family's sake."
The Sheriff's Office is still investigating the case, the man's name has not been released at this time.
