WEST GLACIER, MT. – The death of 28-year old Amy Marie Reddig of Kalispell, whose body was recovered near the head of Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park on Thursday, March 14, was determined to be accidental. According to the Flathead County Coronor’s Office, Reddig’s cause of death was drowning, with contributing factors of hypothermia and schizophrenia.
Acting Glacier National Park Superintendent Kym Hall said, “We send our sympathy to the Reddig Family, and our appreciation to our partners that provided professional and timely assistance during the incident.”
Park dispatch received a missing person report on Reddig from Flathead County Sheriff’s Office at approximately 10:15 a.m. Thursday, March 14. Park rangers found Reddig’s vehicle in the parking lot of Lake McDonald Lodge at approximately 11:45 a.m. and a search was initiated in the surrounding area.
Personnel from Flathead National Forest, Flathead County Sheriff’s Office, Flathead Search and Rescue, North Valley Search and Rescue, and Flathead Emergency Aviation Resources (FEAR) assisted Glacier National Park Rangers and employees in the search.
At approximately 3 p.m. on March 14, personnel in the FEAR helicopter found a body at the head of Lake McDonald, near the inlet of McDonald Creek. The Flathead County Coroner was transported to the scene and identified the body as that of Reddig.
Lake McDonald is the largest lake in Glacier National Park at approximately 10 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. The lake reaches depths of more than 470 feet. McDonald Creek, the longest stream in the park, originates near the Continental Divide in the heart of the park and enters Lake McDonald on the upper northeast side. Lower McDonald Creek exits Lake McDonald at Apgar and continues to the Middle Fork of the Flathead River. The water temperature was approximately 36 degrees when Reddig’s body was recovered.
Drowning is the number one cause of death in the park. Visitors are reminded to use caution and care around water.
