City of Missoula and UM sign Community Quality of Life Initiative
MISSOULA, Mont. -

The University of Montana and the city of Missoula have signed what supporters are calling a community quality of life initiative.

It opens doors to new housing construction, safety rental inspections and efforts to solve transportation and parking problems.

Mayor John Engen, UM President Royce Engstrom and ASUM President Zach Brown signed the initiative and plan to form an advisory  committee.

"We're going to see what the next 50 years in Missoula will look like with the University of Montana planning together,"said Engen.

"As a University and as  a city," said Engstrom, "we want to come together and make this the model university community."

"Students are committed to being good neighbors," said ASUM president Zach Brown,"we're invested in the future of this community as well and we're excited to be a part of this agreement."

The University and the city have agreed to create up to 1,000 new  housing units for students near campus in the next two years.

They want an ordinance allowing safety inspections of residential rentals.

The quality of life initiative includes everything from parking and managing parties to garbage and dog control.
