POLSON, Mont. -

Lake County authorities have released the name of a Browning man they say stabbed a man in Polson on Saturday morning. Lake County investigators say 32-year old Makueeyapeh Whitford stabbed 26-year old Polson resident John Pierre. Whitford is currently in custody at the Lake County Detention Facility on a charge of Deliberate Homicide.

Lake County deputies say a call came in at about 4:00 am on Saturday that a male subject had been stabbed at a home on the 1600 block of 1st Street East in Polson. The alleged stabbing victim was later pronounced dead at St. Joseph Hospital.

“We haven’t been able to find a motive in this case, but…alcohol consumption played a big factor in this whole incident,” said Lake County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Office Karen Sargeant.

Whitford was later taken into custody at a local motel. The investigation has been a joint effort between the Polson Police Department, and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, with help from Tribal Law and Order.

On Sunday, NBC Montana spoke with a man who claimed to be friends with the stabbing victim. He tells NBC Montana the stabbing happened outside of a house party. He says a group of people went outside to smoke, and he suddenly heard “John’s bleeding! John’s bleeding!” He says he performed CPR on his friend while also trying to keep pressure on a stab wound in his chest. He also told NBC Montana that the suspect had been speaking aggressively at the party.

The man tells NBC Montana that Pierre was loyal to those who he trusted, and was always there for people.
