Early birds hit the trails for First Day Hikes
KALISPELL, Mont. -

While some folks may have slept in after staying up past midnight on New Year's Eve, others took to the trails Tuesday morning for First Day Hikes, put on by America's State Parks.

All 50 state park systems sponsored the 2013 program aimed at getting families out on a healthy hike to start the new year. Kalispell's Lone Pine State Park hosted it's very 1st First Day Hike. Guides tell us the 2012 event had 14,000 participants who hiked over 30,000 miles.

One hiker said he just moved to the Flathead and didn't know the guided hike was a national event.

"I don't live too far from here so I just wanted to come up and see the area," said Josh Trautner. "I heard there was a guided tour so I figured it would be a good way to learn the trails. I didn't know it was going on all over the place. It's a fantastic idea to get people out, get them acquainted with what they got surrounding them."
