"First Night" signifies a celebration of the first night of the new year as well as looking forward into the future as a community. First Night Flathead truly embraces community as they kicked off free events Monday afternoon at the Kalispell Center Mall.
Kids and parents had the opportunity to ride ponies, get their faces painted, even decorate hats and masks to go with First Night Flathead's masquerade ball theme. This year, organizers are encouraging a more interactive event - asking folks to take pictures and post them to their Facebook page, creating a digital archive.
NBC Montana caught up with some first-time First Nighters who said they were glad to see so many family-friendly things to do on a night normally reserved for parties.
"She just moved here all the way from Michigan," Ashley Yerrick explained about her mom, Sandy. "So we're celebrating the new year together because we haven't gotten to in a while."
"It's pretty cool," said Sandy Yerrick. "It's nice, nice to be able to bring the family and do things and not have to worry about all the craziness."
