Former employees surprised at Gallatin Gateway Inn closure

When Gallatin Gateway Inn employees showed up to the historic hotel on Sunday, they found the doors locked shut and a sign stating the inn was closed until further notice.

When NBC Montana went to the Gallatin Gateway Inn on Monday, former employees were outside waiting around for the owner.

Former front desk associate Donald Akina said he was hoping to talk with other former employees for the last time before they all went separate ways.

"It's sad for the whole community" he said, about the abrupt closure.

He said he was surprised, but there'd been some signs of trouble.

"There had been some red flags showing for a while, but we just didn't expect the shoe to drop quite this soon" Akina said.

The building is 86 years old, he said, and if it sits empty too long he worries it'll become too much for a new owner to maintain.

We checked the Gallatin Gateway Inn Facebook page. and found they posted a message about their closure, followed by a post that a new owner is interested in buying the building.

However, the latter post was deleted, and a new posting surfaced, stating "changes are coming."

Akina said he doesn't think it'll be too long before a new owner purchases the hotel.

"Something as beautiful as this probably won't remain closed for very long" he said. "Hopefully it'll come back to life as a hotel again, and live up to what it was meant to be."
