HELENA, Mont. -

The general who ordered an investigation into the state's Disaster and Emergency Services says he was fired last year after he re-hired a woman who was suing the state over her dismissal from the troubled agency.

Brigadier Gen. Joel Cusker says he was given no explanation for his dismissal by new Adjutant Gen. Matthew Quinn last April. Cusker says he concluded from meetings and conversations with then-Gov. Brian Schweitzer's top aides that it was over the decision to re-hire a person who had shown "disloyalty."

Cusker spoke to The Associated Press recently because he said he believed it was important for the truth to be known.

Department of Military Affairs spokesman Maj. Timothy Crowe says the new adjutant general wanted to be surrounded by his own top aides.
