BOZEMAN, Mont. -

People in the small town of Logan are closely watching the river.

The Gallatin River is completely frozen over in the Logan area. One resident said extreme temperatures changes on the river have caused problems before."The river has flooded in the past. I know that. the town has seen some trouble," said Weber.

Beth McCury owns a restaurant in Logan. She told NBC Montana last winter the river never froze over."The water was running all year last year. It has to be really cold like it is right now, below zero," said McCury.

Staff Captain Patrick Lonergan of The Gallatin County Emergency Management has been recording water levels."It's very common for that section to freeze numerous times in the winter like we saw in the last day as the ice forms and pushes the water out of the channel,"explained Lonergan.

Captain Lonergan said while the river is in this condition it can be very dangerous and it's best to stay away.
