MISSOULA, Mont. -

Missoula authorities say a man has been charged with felony assault after striking a police officer in the face.

Det. Scott Pastian says a patrol officer who was making a shoplifting arrest at a Walmart Sunday received a call that an intoxicated man was being disruptive at the store.

Pastian tells the Missoulian the officer told the man to leave and he became belligerent, striking her in the face.

The officer used pepper spray and a stun gun and took the man into custody.

The Missoula County jail roster says 52-year-old Eric Dean Van Zomeren has been charged with assault of a police officer, trespass to property, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

The assault charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.
