FRENCHTOWN, Mont. -

Missoula County is urging state and federal environmental agencies to seek a cleanup agreement with the owners of the former Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. paper mill site in Frenchtown that could keep it off the Superfund National Priorities List.

County commissioners asked the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the state Department of Environmental Quality to work with M2Green through a consent decree to clean up toxins so M2Green can attract new businesses to the rebranded Frenchtown Technology and Industrial Center.

Late last year, the county sought a Superfund listing. M2Green redevelopment manager Ray Stillwell suggested a consent decree in mid-February.

Peter Nielsen with the Missoula City-County Health Department says the goal is to get the site cleaned up and make is usable for other purposes.
