Friday night was the 20th annual celebration of the “Festival of the Dead,” in downtown Missoula.
Hundreds of people paraded through the downtown area, along Higgins Avenue, celebrating the lives of the dearly departed with creative performances, costumes and shrines.
Festival goers say they are thrilled Missoula hosts a Day of the Dead Festival.
Missoula resident Brock Hoover said his wife is from Brazil, where she says Day of the Dead Festivals are widely celebrated, so they were thrilled to see such a celebration in Missoula.
“We wanted to come out and have a good time,” said Hoover. “Our daughter loves anything with costumes and masks so this is perfect.”
Art is also an important part of the Day of the Dead.
Each year, people are welcomed to gather at the Zootown Arts Community Center to make sugar skulls and paint faces.
