New businesses call downtown Missoula home

MISSOULA, Mont. -

According to the Downtown Missoula Association, more than 25 storefront businesses have set up shop in downtown Missoula since the start of last year. Staff attribute that partly to the successful implementation of the city’s master plan, by following through with urban renewal projects.

One new business opened on Friday. The owners of “Plonk” already have a successful location in Bozeman, and they decided to bring their business to downtown Missoula. The business offers up wine, food, and cocktails, and the business has hired more than 40 employees so far.

“It feels like we’re climbing out of an economic recession in the last few years and I’m a lover of Montana’s downtowns, being a Montanan myself,” said Plonk co-owner Brett Evje.

Blocks away, staff at Treasure State Donuts continued getting ready for their own opening, which they hope will happen sometime in the first week of April. Staff have been handing out free samples to folks who stop by, and testing out flavors. Treasure State Donuts has hired roughly ten employees so far.

General Manager Stephanie Lubrecht says she and the owners of Bridge Pizza often talked about Missoula’s lack of a donut shop.

“Then this location opened up and it seemed like the right timing, so we decided to try and make that a reality,” said Lubrecht.
