New neurosurgery center set to open at Hamilton hospital
The last piece of equipment for Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital’s new neurosurgery center just arrived. It’s a $350,000 microscope that will allow surgeons to perform precise incisions for specialized neurosurgeries.
“It is the top model, from what I think is the top brand, delivered to this hospital, and I'm really excited about it," said Doctor Richard Day, a neurosurgeon hired from Missoula to open up the new neurosurgery center.
Day says the center will allow the hospital to serve a growing population in Ravalli County, providing treatments patients would normally need to travel long distances to receive.
“We do have that aging population, where people are approaching that age where spine problems become more common," said Day.
The population is aging nationwide. According to U.S. Census projections, the numbers of baby boomers aged 65 and older will make up 20% of the population by 2030.
Day says the new surgery center is about meeting the needs of future patients, but also about improving the quality of treatment now.
“The advantage now is when (patients) come see me, I can offer the operation at this hospital."
Marcus Daly will begin seeing patients on February 18th. To schedule an appointment, call the hospital at 375-4714.
