BUTTE, Mont. -

Butte-Silver Bow Police and Montana Highway Patrol troopers will be hitting the streets in high numbers for St. Patrick's Day weekend in Butte.

Authorities tell NBC Montana they will have patrol cars out primarily Friday night, and will be focusing on the streets and sidewalks for Saturday and Sundays events.

There will be 22 officers on foot Saturday, and 35 officers will be on foot Sunday. Policing the streets with foot patrols began about five years ago during local festivals and parades.

NBC Montana spoke to Butte-Silver Bow Undersheriff George Skuletich, and asked him how effective these foot patrols are.

"When we started this several years ago we had over 100 and some-odd arrests, the last couple of years we've been down in the thirties and forties,” said Skuletich.

“So it's been really good that way and the crowds have expected us out there. They know what to expect from us and we know what to expect from them, so it's been working really well,” he concluded.
