Poplar man gets life in prison for strangulation
A 27-year-old Poplar man has been sentenced to life in prison for the August 2011 strangulation death of a drinking companion.
The U.S. Attorney's Office says U.S. District Judge Sam Haddon sentenced Adrien Matuck on Monday for the death of 33-year-old Raymond Brown. Haddon also ordered Matuck to pay nearly $6,700 in restitution.
A jury convicted Matuck of first-degree murder in September. Prosecutors said Matuck strangled Brown with a rolled-up T-shirt as he slept. The two men had argued on Aug. 6, 2011 after Brown allegedly hit a woman.
Brown was found dead in a recliner at his cousin's house in Poplar the next day. A witness testified that he saw Matuck hide a rolled-up T-shirt under a rock near his house early on Aug. 7, 2011.
