Troy Mine might have to lay off workers

KALISPELL, Mont. -

Revett Minerals says it's unclear when it can resume operations at the Troy Mine in western Montana following rockslides inside abandoned parts of the mine and might have to lay off workers.

Chief Executive Officer John Shanahan says that the copper and silver mine could be weeks or months away from starting up again.

He says the company shut down underground operations Dec. 1 after the rockslides. He says rain in November and freezing temperatures in December led to unstable ground conditions causing rock inside the mine to crack. A series of small earthquakes in the region in December might also have contributed.

Revett has kept all 205 employees at the mine working on other projects, but with the continued underground shutdown layoffs are possible.
