Kalispell schools review, increase security measures

Kalispell Public Schools voted to expel two students at a special meeting Tuesday. The first is a Kalispell Middle School student accused of having marijuana. His expulsion is through the rest of the school year, and School Resource Officer Cory Clarke recommended charges of criminal possession of dangerous drugs and distribution on or near school property.

At Flathead HS, a freshman is out until the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year after being accused of possessing prescription drugs.

Superintendent Darlene Schottle says the two cases aren't indicative of any changing drug use patterns.

"Our schools are reflective of what we see in the communities and what we're trying to do is ensure that we're creating that safe environment," said Schottle. "Yes, we have seen it happen within the school sites, but we certainly try to work to make sure it doesn't happen again."

Both students are pending a review before being allowed back in school.
