MISSOULA, Mont. -

University of Montana vice president Robert Duringer died less than three weeks before he planned to retire.

The university announced Thursday that vice president of administration and finance Robert Duringer died Wednesday. He was 63.

Duringer announced in June that he planned to retire at the end of the year after suffering a pulmonary embolism.

The Missoulian reports Duringer served in the Army and retired as a colonel. He worked at West Point Academy, Oregon State University and the University of Maine before starting at UM in 2000.

UM President Royce Engstrom said Duringer was responsible for overseeing significant growth of the campus infrastructure. He also oversaw the Adams Center, Business and Facilities services, human resources, public safety and the Office of Planning, Budget, and Analysis.
