WHITEFISH, Mont. -

A Whitefish police officer tracked and killed a mountain lion in city limits on Wednesday. Dispatch received reports that a mountain lion was walking up on people’s decks in the Glenwood Road area of Whitefish, near Whitefish Lake.

The initial call came in at around noon, and mountain lions are typically nocturnal animals. Officers decided the animal was a danger and made the call to kill the animal.  An officer shot the mountain lion, killing it with a hit to the neck. Whitefish Police Chief Bill Dial says the animal reportedly peered into a family’s window. Dial says the animal is a female, roughly 100 pounds and was apparently around two or three years old when it was shot.

Officers say anyone who sees a mountain lion near their home should contact Flathead County Dispatch at 863-2420.
