Officers say a man is dead after an apparent dispute with his girlfriend in Whitefish. Details are limited at this time, but Whitefish Police Chief Bill Dial says an apparent homicide occurred in the area of the 400 block of Colorado Avenue around 9:30 pm Saturday night.
Dial says 37-year old Katherine Lanegan showed up to a neighbor's house, and told them that she had shot her boyfriend. Dial says officers had Lanegan in custody a few minutes after a call to 911. Dial says multiple firearms were found in the house in which the alleged homicide occurred.
Whitefish officers have identified the deceased as 42-year old Ordean L. EngeBretson. Officers say he was found lying on the living room floor of a house, and pronounced dead at the scene. Dial says he EngeBretson had been shot multiple times in his torso.
Dial tells NBC Montana that Lanegan apparently used her pistol to shoot EngeBretson.
"One neighbor reported hearing screaming and only hearing one shot. There was obviously more than one shot," said Dial.
Dial says officers found Lanegan at a nearby residence, on a porch. One neighbor tells NBC Montana that Lanegan was arrested at gunpoint.
"Ms. Lanegan told us she was attempting to defend herself," said Dial.
Lanegan remains in custody pending review by the Flathead County Attorney's Office. Self defense has not been ruled out, and Dial says there may not be a charge in the incident.
"There's been some discussion. We always look at that. We're an advocate for both the victim and the suspect," said Dial.
Dial also says that there hasn't been a homicide in Whitefish city limits in roughly ten years. He says this incident was an isolated one, and described it as unfortunate.
