A family fishing pond in Kalispell opened Saturday for the summer season. Kids, parents, and grandparents made their way to Pine Grove Pond for the third annual kids fishing derby. Those who cast their poles had a chance to win prizes for first fish, smallest fish, and largest fish.
The man-made pond was built three years ago by Robin Street and his family and dedicated to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. Since then, its become a popular destination for folks to teach young ones how to catch their first fish.
"Continuing the tradition," said angler Rich Funk. "Our family has been fishing in the valley for 130 years. My hope is that the boys can each get a decent fish and have a real good experience."
Pine Grove Pond is open until October to all ages. Anglers 15 years and older must catch and release their fish. Kids 14 years and younger can keep limited numbers.
