MISSOULA, Mont. -

A 23-year-old Missoula man died last night after taking an accidental gunshot wound to the chest.

Officers say his 21-year-old acquaintance fired the fatal pistol shot early Sunday morning at a residence on Turner Street, in north Missoula.

Police say another man that witnessed the shooting called police around 12:05 a.m.

An ambulance transported the man to St. Patrick Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Some neighbors tell NBC Montana they didn't hear a pronounced gunshot, others thought they heard a firework go off.

Neighbor Michelle Aamold tells us she didn't know anything happened until she looked out her window and saw police car everywhere.

“I got up to open the windows, because of course it was hot last night, and when I opened them I noticed there were lots and lots of cop cars outside,” she says.  “I didn't know what was going on but later I did hear neighbors walking around on the sidewalk and talking that evidently somebody had been shot in the apartment just down the way.”

Police tell us its unknown if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the shooting.

They say the incident is still under investigation and no charges have been filed.
