Alcohol sales rise during holiday weekend

KALISPELL, Mont. -

Holiday weekends in the warm summer and early fall months mean a few things usually, most of which involve alcohol.

Americans drink an average of 6.3 Billion gallons of beer every year.

We looked into some statistics on alcohol consumption which tell us Montanans rank 3rd nationally, where 40.6 gallons of beer per capita are consumed.

Little wonder Laura Poinsette of Brix Bottleshop tells us that this weekend, like most holidays, have been very busy.

"This weekend, Friday was I think the second busiest day since we've opened, so it went really well,” said Poinsette.  “The rest of the weekend was a little slower just because everyone was out playing, camping, and floating, but it was a good weekend."

While Poinsette points out that they've only been open since last Decemeber, she tells us they've had other busy holidays too.

"Fourth of July was definitely busy."

We spoke with a few liquor and grocery stores in the area to get a sense of how business has been this holiday weekend compared to previous ones.  Almost all of them tell NBC Montana that business is great, and this is one of the best years in recent memory.

As for Poinsette and Brix Bottleshop, they're enjoying the business now, and say they're already planning ahead for the next big holiday.

"Obviously we're looking forward to Christmas again but pretty much the whole holiday season.  Everybody's going to need a table with some bottles of wine on it so we're ready for the holiday gauntlet."
