HELENA MONTANA CAPITOL
HELENA, Mont. -

Sponsors of proposed ballot initiatives are scrambling for voter signatures in the final days before the deadline to make the Nov. 4 general election ballot.

The Montana Secretary of State's office has approved a dozen initiative petitions for signature-gathering.

The deadline is Friday.

Some proposals conflict, such as one to expand Medicaid to the working poor and another to ban state resources to administer the national health care law that allows the expansion.

Other proposals would bar the use or possession of marijuana, ban warrantless searches and roll back a tax increase for Charter Communications.

Initiatives must receive 24,175 voter signatures from across Montana to make the ballot, while proposed constitutional amendments need 48,349 signatures to qualify.

At least two legislative referendums also will be on the ballot.
