HELENA, Mont. -

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Helena's bankruptcy filing lists assets of just over $16 million and liabilities totaling $33.6 million.

The diocese filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization on Jan. 31 as part of a proposed $15 million settlement with hundreds of victims who said clergy members sexually abused them and the church covered it up.

Court documents filed Friday indicated the diocese has $7.4 million in real estate and $8.7 million in personal property. The assets include Legendary Lodge on Salmon Lake valued at $3.5 million along with $6.1 million in deposits and loans owed by various churches or schools within the diocese. The filing said churches, cemeteries and other property worth $33 million is held by individual parishes.

The diocese reported $28.9 million in unsecured debt and $4.7 million in secured claims.
