Big Sky Documentary Film Festival announces line up
MISSOULA, Mont. -

The following is a press release from the Big Sky Documentary Film Festival:

The 2014 lineup was selected from over 1,000 submissions from around the world, and features an array of films covering all genres in the feature, short, and mini-doc categories.

Continuing a tradition with HBO Documentary Films, the festival's opening night will once again center on an early look at an upcoming film from the network's documentary film division. Paycheck to Paycheck: The Life and Times of Katrina Gilbert is a searing and heartfelt portrayal of a single mom who struggles under the poverty line despite working a full-time job. Paycheck is executive-produced by Maria Shriver, and is part of the Emmy-winning journalist's series "The Shriver Report: A Woman's Nation Pushes Back from the Brink." The Saturday night screening is free and open to the public.

Somber tones will be balanced with a healthier-than-usual dose of laughter in BSDFF venues this year, as the festival has embraced comedy as its theme for 2014. The comedy strand features a mix of new films, encores from films screened over the last 10 years, and a selection of classic films. The theme will be anchored by a live set from renowned comic Tig Notaro at the Wilma Theater on February 19th. Opening for Notaro is Missoula native and University of Montana alumnus Chris Fairbanks, who roomed with Notaro in Los Angeles back when both were launching their comedy careers.

Comedy also figures heavily in the subject of this year's retrospective, director and producer Robert Weide. Best known for his work as principal director and executive producer of HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm, Weide is an Emmy-winning and Oscar-nominated documentarian who specializes in the stories of comic geniuses, having made acclaimed films about W.C. Fields, Mort Sahl, Lenny Bruce and Woody Allen. Among the highlights of Weide's visit to this year's festival is expected to be a Q&A session following the screening of the pilot episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, which was originally slated as a one-off mockumentary.

Other strands of note include "Made in Montana", which showcases films shot in or created by filmmakers living in Big Sky Country, and "The Wild 50," a collection of films selected to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Wilderness Act, the screenings of which will be free to the public.

The Big Sky Doc Shop-the industry-centric portion of the festival-is the beneficiary of a new sponsorship agreement with the University of Montana. The Doc Shop schedule, much of which will take place on the University of Montana campus, includes workshops, Work-in-Progress presentations, panels, and the annual International Pitch Session. In addition to helping visiting filmmakers hone their skills and their careers, Doc Shop offers the general public a fascinating look inside the business of documentary filmmaking.

The Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, the premiere venue for non-fiction film in the American West and the largest cinema event in Montana, is consistently ranked in as one of the top documentary festivals worldwide.
