BOZEMAN, Mont. -

Police say a 74-year-old Bozeman man accidentally shot himself in the hand while trying to stop an intruder.

According to court documents, Orion Alonso, 23, was trying to get in to a home just before 2 a.m. on the 1800-block of South Church when he woke up the man inside.

The homeowner told police he ordered Alonso to leave, and warned him that he was armed.  When Alonso reportedly refused to leave, and continued banging on the door, the homeowner told officers he began loading his handgun and that is when he shot himself.

Police say the homeowner fired a second warning shot but Alonso continued banging.  Court records say Alonso appeared to be intoxicated and indicated that he thought he was at his own house.

In court Friday morning Alonso pleaded not guilty to three misdemeanor charges: criminal mischief, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct. The judge set bond at $500.
