Bullock responds to GOP on Baucus replacement
Montana Gov. Steve Bullock is assuring Republican legislative leaders that he will meet all the legal requirements in appointing a replacement to U.S. Sen. Max Baucus.
Baucus is scheduled for a confirmation hearing Tuesday for his nomination as the next ambassador to China. If he is confirmed and resigns his Senate seat to take the post, the Democratic governor will select an interim senator to fill Baucus' term.
Republican leaders earlier this month sent Bullock a letter requesting a transparent process in selecting a replacement that involves the public.
Bullock responded Friday that state law gives him the responsibility and that an appointee "will represent the interests of all Montanans."
Senate President Jeff Essmann told The Associated Press that Bullock's response was a non-answer and "the people deserve better than that."
