BUTTE, Mont. -

Butte-Silver Bow officials say the recent collapse of a dilapidated building could be the impetus needed to spur leaders to deal with derelict properties.

District 9 Commissioner Dan Foley tells the Montana Standard (http://bit.ly/TWI7TF) that neglected properties could also be hindering economic development because they give the community a run-down appearance.

Chief Executive Matt Vincent on Wednesday called for hiring another code-enforcement officer to help enforce rules to keep properties looking respectable.

The county last year identified 229 properties that needed immediate attention.

But officials also say they need to balance community safety, economic development and Butte's rich cultural heritage.

Gary Corbin of the Community Enrichment Department notes the city has an elderly population segment that doesn't have the money or physical ability to fix up their properties.
