BUTTE, Mont. -

Butte police are investigating a murder after a man apparently was stabbed at a retirement home. Investigators claim 72-year-old John Grubbs Sr. stabbed another 72-year-old man at the Continental Gardens Retirement Housing over an argument about money.

Continental Gardens residents told us they didn't know what to think when they were woken up in the middle of the night.

"At 1:30, quarter to 2 the alarms kept going off," said Elsie Delmoe.

"I thought maybe there was a fire and I got up and there was police and ambulance and fire trucks all over," said Merlyn James.

But then they learned police were responding to a homicide.

"I just can't believe it," said Delmoe.

Grubbs appeared in court Wednesday on deliberate homicide charges after allegedly stabbing another resident to death at the retirement homes.

"The one witness indicated that they had been arguing possibly about the victim owing the suspect some money," said Butte-Silver Bow Sheriff Ed Lester.

Both lived at the retirement center. Police said the fight took place in one of the common areas inside around 1:45 in the morning, after they'd been drinking.

"At some point the suspect approached the victim and either slashed or stabbed him in the throat causing a fatal injury," said Lester.

Residents said they're shocked by the news.

"Well I never thought it would happen here where I live at a senior complex," said James.

And people who knew the victim tell NBC Montana he was a kind man, they valued his friendship and will miss him.

"He was just a wonderful, wonderful friend," said resident Ginny Fabian.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and Grubbs will appear in court again next month. Grubbs is being held on $250,000 bail.

The name of the victim has not yet been released. LaBreche says an autopsy is planned Thursday. The cause of death has not been released.
