HAMILTON, Mont. -

The Wilderness Institute at the University of Montana is offering citizen science backpacking trips into the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness.

The free trips pair volunteers with guides as they head into the remote wilderness to examine such things noxious weeds, or trail and campsite conditions.

Catherine Filardi is the citizen science program director at the Wilderness Institute.

She tells the Ravalli Republic that the purpose of the program is to collect information on recreation sites and to involve people in wilderness stewardship.

There are 14 scheduled trips over the summer, with the first having been held June 27 to June 30. Another is planned Thursday to July 15.
