KALISPELL, Mont. -

Congressman Steve Daines is on a 2-day tour of northwest Montana businesses and attractions.

His day Friday started with opening remarks at the Montana Economic Outlook Seminar, followed by a visit to Glacier National Park, where he went snowshoeing with elementary school students from Kila after meeting with new Park Superintendent Jeff Mow.

We caught up with Daines at the Samaritan House in Kalispell. The Samaritan House is a Homeless Shelter and provides transitional housing to those in need in the Flathead, including a program that is specifically targeted at homeless veterans. About a third of the residents at Samaritan House are veterans.

On Tuesday, Daines joined the U.S. House in passing legislation to restore veterans’ retirement benefits that were cut in a recent budget bill.

"I'm the son of a Marine and I learned how important it is to always support our veterans. I found it very, very troubling that Congress would seek to try to find ways to reduce spending on the backs of our veterans and their pension, so that's why I voted against that budget. And it's good to see the vote we took this week now, that restored those pensions." Daines said Friday.

His northwest Montana tour continues Saturday in Eureka and Kila, where he plans to visit the Eureka Pellet Mill and Cabinet Peaks Medical Center.
