GREAT FALLS, Mont. -

Furloughs begin this week for civilian employees of the Department of Defense in Montana.

The Great Falls Tribune reports about 800 people in Montana will be affected by the furloughs required to meet federal budget cuts.

About 525 civilian personnel at Malmstrom Air Force Base and more than 200 with the Montana National Guard in Montana, plus some Army personnel, have been receiving furlough notices for the last week.

Commissaries on military bases nationwide are closing on Mondays due to civilian furloughs. Malmstrom's commissary is already closed on Mondays, so it also will be closed on Tuesdays starting this week through the end of September.

Most civilian personnel will be furloughed for one eight-hour shift per week through Sept. 30.

The Montana furloughs are expected to save the department $3.2 million.
