FBI takes over investigation into state senator
The FBI is stepping in to lead the investigation into a state senator and Blackfeet tribal leader accused of fleeing an officer who suspected him of drunken driving.
A search-warrant application filed Tuesday says the FBI is investigating possible charges of obstructing a peace officer, driving under the influence and reckless driving against Democratic Sen. Shannon Augare.
Augare, who also is a Blackfeet council member, was pulled over on the reservation May 26.
An affidavit by FBI Special Agent Jason Grende says Augare had been drinking with his family at a Cut Bank bar before leaving with his mother.
The affidavit says Augare told the deputy who pulled them over he had no jurisdiction. Augare allegedly revved the engine and left after the deputy tried to grab his keys.
